Get ready for a new VMware logo, this logo will shed the infamous “3 Boxes” and also include a slight typographical change which in my opinion is a little easier on the eyes.

There are thousands of computing utilities out there that any sys admin uses each and everyday. These can include:

Simple command line based utilities
Web-based AD user password reset sites
Windows password cracking utils
Network monitoring utils
File or disk quota monitoring utils

Whether they’re free open-source or closed-source, everyone has opinions about them. Often times the bells and whistles are way too much for the true hard-core scripting gurus who’d rather re-invent the wheel for their purposes than adapt to the many nuances of these utilities.

Still time is money and there are too hats to put on, too many fires to put out to go scour and test any of these utilities that may make our lives any bit easier. But go forward we must and try and see if these utilities are stable enough for our needs.

Far be it for me to try to even make sense of most of them, but I’ll try a few out and put my reviews out there.

I’ll look to review a different type each week, putting all of them in the same arena, give my newbie opinions and solicit yours.

Everyone and their grandmother is blogging and twittering. And myself being on the bleeding of edge of technology, has decided that this time has come. Please hold the cheers and applause til later.

Possibly out of unemployed necessity and the need to redefine my career in this economy, I set out to blog. A ripple in the ocean, or perhaps a tree falling in the forest… I will be heard.

Who is my target audience? Possibly a future employer or new colleagues? Yes probably, but for the most part I will attempt to offer tips, advice, and work on projects online. But mostly this is to chronicle my journey to start a network consulting business and along the way try to set out to truly learn and advance my skills in windows, linux, virtualization, networking.

A few details about myself, with more to come in future posts:

10+ years in the IT field, working mainly in a windows sys admin/engineering role
Bachelors in Biology (hey at least its science)
Post college Microsoft Certified Professional certifications helped me land a call center help desk job at a major financial brokerage
Worked in internet startups as well as trading floors at financial companies
Experience with small to medium sized networking including rackmounted blade server setups at colocation facilities
Varied exposure to VMware, Windows 2003, Linux, Cisco, WatchGuard Firewalls

I know it sounds sexy… but believe me, for me to continue my snowboarding, surfing, cycling hobbies, a man’s gotta (l)earn a living.
